“I was born with a dick in my brain, yeah fucked in the head.”
This statement is repeatedly confirmed throughout the playback of “Relapse”, the latest release from Rap/Hip Hop artist Eminem.
If your first impression of Eminem is this record then you would probably find it to be the most vulgar, inappropriate thing you’ve ever heard. But I’m sure since you likely don’t live under a rock you are probably aware of the distasteful, controversial content that has helped Marshall Mathers sell over 35 million records worldwide since 1999.
I’ve listened to Relapse front to back about five times now and it’s clear that Eminem is following the same marketing strategy of pushing the envelope further and further, becoming more indecent and distasteful in order to create publicity for himself and his new record. While this may seem absurd it works, 48 hours after hearing the album I had shared it with at least half a dozen people not because it’s a marvel of musical genius or something new and original, but because of the lyrical content.
Bottom line, if you enjoyed the earlier work by Eminem then you’ll love how he has brought back some of the gritty dirty style on Relapse. If you’ve never liked Eminem you’ll hate this record as you do all the others. If you’re like most people then you enjoy the Eminem tracks that play on the radio as they’re usually commercially viable works with a bouncy chorus and just enough controversy to keep you entertained. If that is the Eminem you like then don’t bother with the album, enjoy current singles “Crack a Bottle” and “We Made You” and wait for the next few to come out by the time you’re sick of the old ones.
